For example, if you're concerned with durability of the surfaces consider this chart:

Granite & Slate - Great for floors, even those with the most use, such as a utility room entry. These are all-around durable surfaces. Great for kitchen countertops too. Not pourous like the others.
Marble - Great for floors & bathroom vanities, but not as good for kitchen countertops because of its high pourous nature.
Limestone - Great for floors. Pourous nature not good for kitchen countertops.
Travertine - Great for floors. Also has a pourous nature, making it less than ideal for kitchen countertops.

Use this chart as a guide but at Newport Tile and Marble we always say,
" Respect the stone....and the Stone will respect you". In other words if you tend to the unique needs of your natural surface it will be always be a beautiful feature of your home, regardless of where it is used.
